KALAT DIVISION

The State of Kalat was established in 1666, with the ruler holding the title of ‘Wali’. This designation persisted until 1739, when the title was officially changed to ‘Khan’. By the late 19th century, parts of the state, particularly in the north and northeast, were either leased or ceded to form British Balochistan. This transition marked a significant shift in the region’s administrative control.

On March 28, 1948, Kalat acceded to Pakistan, a pivotal moment that marked the beginning of a new administrative era for the state. Subsequently, on October 3, 1952, Kalat was incorporated into the Balochistan State Union. However, this status was short-lived. On October 14, 1955, the province of West Pakistan was created, leading to the dissolution of the Balochistan State Union and the reorganization of regional governance.

Kalat Division was established after the dissolution of the Balochistan state union on 14 October 1955. When the Baluchistan States Union became Kalat Division, Khuzdar was established as the divisional headquarters. At the time of its establishment, the division had four districts (04) Kalat, Makran, Lasbela, and Kharan district.

In 1960, Lasbela district transferred to form Karachi-Bela division. On 1 July 1971, Makran district separates from Kalat Division to form a separate division. In 1972, Lasbela district again become a part of Kalat division. In 1974, a new district Khuzdar created from Kalat district and added in Kalat Division.

In 1991, Mastung district spelt from Kalat district territory included in Kalat Division. In 1992, Awaran district split from khuzdar district and added in Kalat Division.

In 2007, Washuk district created from Kharan district territory and added in Kalat Division.

On 17 May 2015, Kharan and Washuk district shifted from Kalat Division to newly established Rakhshan Division. In 2017, Surab district created from Kalat district territory included in Kalat Division.

Recently, in 2022, Hub district split from Lasbela district and added in Kalat division.

Gadani Ship Breaking
The Gadani shipbreaking yard ranks as the third largest shipbreaking facility in the world. It is comprised of 132 shipbreaking plots. During the 1980s, Gadani held the title of the largest shipbreaking yard globally, employing around 30,000 workers. However, increased competition and the provision of more advanced amenities in India and Bangladesh have led to a decline in its output. Currently, Gadani produces less than one-fifth of the scrap metal it generated back in 1980. The workforce has also diminished significantly, with the number of employees now approximately 6,000. This reduction reflects the challenges and changes facing the shipbreaking industry at Gadani today.
