KALAT DIVISION

Kalat Division is a prominent administrative division in the central part of Balochistan, Pakistan. It comprises seven districts: Mastung, Kalat, Surab, Khuzdar, Awaran, Lasbela, and Hub. Each district has its unique geographical, cultural, and economic significance. Kalat was notified as division in the year,1955. Khuzdar became its headquarter in 1965.Kalat division covers land area of 89,982 sq. Km. It’s also larger than 87 Countries. Total population of Kalat Division is 27,21,018 (2023 census).Kalat Division has accommodated three colorful cultures i-e Brahvi, Sindhi & Balochi. Economy of the division is based on Agriculture & Mining. Below is an overview of these districts within Kalat Division:

1. Mastung District

  • Location & Geography: Mastung is situated near Quetta and is known for its mountainous terrain. The district is an important agricultural area within Balochistan.
  • Economy: Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, with crops like wheat, barley, and fruits such as pomegranates being prominent. Mastung is also famous for its mineral resources, including coal.
  • Cultural Significance: The district has historical significance with several archaeological sites and Sufi shrines.

2. Kalat District

  • Historical Background: Kalat is historically significant as the former capital of the Khanate of Kalat. It is known for its cultural heritage, including the Kalat Fort.
  • Climate: The district experiences a cold desert climate with minimal rainfall.
  • Economy: The economy is largely agrarian, with fruit farming (apples, apricots, and grapes) and livestock rearing being key activities.

3. Surab District

  • Geography: Surab is located in the central part of Balochistan and is characterized by hilly terrain.
  • Economy: Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of fruits like apples and apricots, plays a crucial role in the local economy.
  • Challenges: The district faces significant challenges in terms of infrastructure and access to basic services.

4. Khuzdar District

  • Economic Hub: Khuzdar is the largest district in Kalat Division and serves as an economic hub. It is strategically located on the National Highway linking Balochistan with Karachi.
  • Industry & Agriculture: Khuzdar is known for its rich mineral resources, including chromite, and has a vibrant agricultural sector.
  • Education: The district is home to Balochistan University of Engineering and Technology, Khuzdar which is a significant educational institution in the region.

5. Awaran District

  • Geographical Isolation: Awaran is one of the most remote and underdeveloped districts in Balochistan, characterized by its rugged terrain.
  • Economic Challenges: The district’s economy is underdeveloped, with agriculture and livestock being the primary sources of livelihood. Awaran was severely affected by an earthquake in 2013, which impacted its development.
  • Security Concerns: Awaran has been a focal point of conflict in recent years, contributing to its economic and social challenges.

6. Lasbela District

  • Coastal District: Lasbela is a coastal district that plays a crucial role in Balochistan’s economy due to its proximity to the Arabian Sea.
  • Industrial Zone: The district is known for its agricultural and industrial activities, where several industries, including textiles and chemicals, are located.
  • Tourism: Lasbela is also known for its scenic coastal areas and historical sites, making it a potential tourist destination.

7. Hub District

  • Industrial Powerhouse: Hub, formerly part of Lasbela, is an industrial powerhouse in Balochistan. It hosts several large industries, including cement factories and textile mills.
  • Strategic Location: Its proximity to Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, makes it an important commercial center in Balochistan.
  • Economic Contribution: Hub contributes significantly to Balochistan’s economy through its industrial output and trade.
Kalat Division, with its mix of industrial, agricultural, and underdeveloped areas, represents the diverse socio-economic landscape of Balochistan.
